Package holiday

Varadero is famous for it's white sand beaches. It's also famous for being the package holiday destination of Cuba. Not a lot of cultural sights to be visited here but I didn't mind. I wanted to relax for a little while and slowly prepare myself for going back home.
So I had a bit of a lie-in and got up late.
One task of the day was to buy a bus ticket back to Havana which was the reason I went over to the bus terminal.

After looking around the building for a while I finally found someone who told me I should come back tomorrow around 11 am to get a bus ticket for the bus at noon. The complete opposite of what I was told to do in Havana... strange place.
Of course, I was on holidays so it didn't bother me and I went to the beach.
All alone on the beach is a little boring. I sat there for a bit looking at the sea, reading my book, looked at the sea and was bored quite quickly.
Since this was more touristy I thought that also petty crime (against tourists) may be higher than in other places in Cuba so I didn't want to leave my camera under the towel while going swimming, so I brought it back to the room.

Now I needed some food and found a little Italian place. I wasn't sure if it was open yet but the lady came out of the house and opened the gate for me. Even for each the next customers she had to go out and open the gate each time.

The pizza was good and because it was so hot I had to drink two lemonades.
Varadero is a narrow sand bank and you are never far from the beach here. So I went back and because it was really getting hot now I looked for a shady place I could have some more rest.
Then I bumped into the Belgian guys (Stefan and Anke) from the bus stop in Santa Clara again and hung out with them a bit.

After a bit of a swim I dried off by lying in the sun within a couple of minutes.
We didn't do much for most of the time and soon they wanted to get some food, so we went over to a restaurant where I simply had another lemonade while they were having lunch.
Then we discovered a sort of supermarket that sold water and stocked up with a couple 2 litre bottles.
It was really hot today and all I could do here was lying in the shade and snooze.
Another round of swimming in the water to cool off again - the waves were a little higher now - and back on land to dry off and read my book.

We agreed to meet up for some drinks later at 9pm at the bodedita del medio (a copy of the place in Havana that Ernest Hemmingway used to visit).
To get rid of the salt I had a shower - to get warm water into the shower it seems that the cubans had the great idea of connecting a 110V water heater next to the shower head that heats up the water.
After surviving my shower I wrote a little in my blog and then went to get some food before I was going to meet the Belgian people for drinks.

I found a nice looking restaurant, sat down and by chance Stefan and Anke came by and joined me.
Food was not bad and the 7 year old Havana club was 70 cents.
Then we went to a bar called The Beatles where a live band was playing. Beers (in cans) were more expensive than the rum of course but it was a good night with good music.
It was a while since I stayed out long at night and today (or tomorrow?) I got home around 2am.
