The day started great... Moenchengladbach was already 3:1 up against Hoffenheim when I woke up.
I assumed this should be good enough and went for a swim in the Golf of Mexico. When I came back and I checked the phone again after the shower it was 4:1.
Also it was Easter Saturday, so I went for a really nice breakfast with coffee, fresh orange juice and a focacia bread with Argentinian Chorizo and lots of sauces to chose from. Not a bad morning all in all.
Back at the Hostel I rang Yuni over Skype, she was in Korea now. After this I met up with Lisa and Holger again, but this time we wanted to explore the other side of the island (westwards of the town).
The beach was not much better at the beginning as there were quite a bit see weed and rubish dumped in the water but after a few minutes walking it soon became nicer and cleaner again. And as oppose to the eastward beach of yesterday... entirely empty. The water was crystal clear and up the dunes were a few half finished luxury holiday homes, where it appears the developers have run out of money and left them as they are - similar to some ghost towns in Ireland.
Interestingly the doors were not locked and we used this chance to take a look around. Some of these places were huge and for some reason the furniture was all made from concrete - cupboards, kitchen counters and even the beds and couches (missing any mattresses or pillows obviously).
After this exciting "break and enter" experience we continued our exploration of the island along the beach and went for a swim in a cove with particularly clear water.
A little bit further the scenery was even more overwhelming and we decided to swim again and capture the moment with some action/jumping shots.
In the back ground was a long pier into the clear water bordered by a snow white sand beach which again was lined with lush green jungle... it really was paradise. And we were all alone (aside from two people on the pier)! It looked lovely - just a like a post card from the Caribbean you would stick on your fridge in rainy Dublin and hate your friends for sending it.
We continued our walk around the peninsula and ended up in some kind of mangrove forest where we had to turn around and walk inland, through a Cactus forest and finally got home to our hostel.
Here I checked the times for the bus to Cancun Airport tomorrow. This turned out to be more complicated as there was a potential time change in the Yucatan region and Quintana Roo where I was as well as day light savings time and no one know if the time also change in the newly created time zone in Yucatan or not. It was all very confusing (please also keep in mind that this discussion was in Spanish :-)).
I decided to play it safe and take the ferry at 5 am off the island (assuming there as no time change on this island).
Back at the Hostel I had a bit of a rest in the hammocks and at 7 we met up again and it was again the same procedure as the previous two nights.
This time Holger and I decided to check out a nice restaurant as it was the last night in Mexico for both of us. The food was ok and it was not too much more expensive than the street food from the nights before.
To finish off the evening and indeed my visit to Mexico, we picked up Lisa and went for a last couple of rounds of beer and tequila to the Tribu Hostel roof bar. After Holger and Lisa left I went to bed quite late... not expecting to get a very long nights of sleep.
Mexico... what a great place! I am know, I have only seen an tiny part of the countries fantastic food, amazing culture and historic sights, it's beautiful beaches and incredible underwater life, but it has taken me by storm. I am actually surprised who much I enjoyed Mexico. Initially, I thought, I spend a a week or two just relaxing after the busy weeks in Chile and before the new adventure of Cuba, but it was one of the best places I visited, and had sooo many different aspects to enjoy.
One day, you are diving in an old shipwreck or in caverns with crystal clear water, the next day you visit ancient Maya ruins in the deep jungle or an atmospheric, lively little village with colonial architecture and in evening you are enjoying great food and a couple of nice beers on the beach with like minded people... What makes the experience really great, though is that every day you are in for a surprise and a little twist, that usually turns out to have a good ending... You won't get bored of this place. I think I might have to come back.... Even the language is growing on me.
