After only 3 hours of sleep the alarm clock woke me up.
It was time to pack up the last bits and pieces and leave the house.
Everyone was still asleep, of course, it was not even 5 am.
Yesterday it took the last train out of town and now it was the first train back into town. From Southern Cross station I took an airport bus and witnessed a wonderful sunrise behind the skyscrapers of the city.
No problems during check-in or emigration, everyone was helpful and friendly.
The big selection at in the duty free shop convinced me to purchase a birthday present for myself. A bottle of Laphroaig Triple Cask should serve well on my 31st. Because it was not as cheap as I had hoped I resisted the temptation of a coffee and went straight to the gate where an Emirates A380 was already waiting for me (and 500 other).
A bit of reading passed the time until my boarding section was called and soon we were on our way to Auckland.
Breakfast (and coffee) was served on this 4 hour flight.
The immigration and customs checks were quick and painless and it was no problem to bring in my hiking new boots since I only used them in Dublin so far.
The bus to town was right outside and the Hostel just around the corner from the Queen Street stop.
A quick walk around town gave me a first impression of the city and harbour of Auckland.
After a stop at a Asian Food court, where I chose the Malay stand I went back to the hostel and was happy to take a bit of a rest and relax.
I was pretty tired after the short night and busy day yesterday and nearly fell asleep while writing the blog.
There was an offer to go to a mental backpackers party and pub crawl. I didn't even consider this option and decided to get an early night.
Unfortunately I was past the tired point and could not fall asleep anymore.
