Familiar Faces in Bangkok

Today I was going to meet up with Sharon (who I met in Kathmandu). She just arrived late last night and wanted to explore Bangkok a bit before escaping to a little tropical Island.

We previously agreed to meet at Siam Station where our two metro lines met at 10am. Due to the long night before I was just going to make it and had no time for any breakfast.

Siam, seems to be the Mall central of Bangkok, so there should be loads of nice places for food, but we couldn't find anything that suited us so we walked around a bit further and decided to go to MoChit station, where the Chatuchak weekend market was going on. This is Thailand's largest market and has up to 200,000 visitors each day (sat or sun).

We would certainly find some nice food there, and we did.

The market itself was a bit disappointing. It was really large but I could not see anything at one of the 15000 stalls that I would want to buy.

Luckily Sharon was not in the shopping mood too much either, so we went to the park, where I had no problem napping away for 30 min or so under the shade of a large palm tree by the lake. I was still pretty exhausted from the night and while Sharon wanted to see the temples I had already seen I went back to the hostel and wrote a bit on the blog and read my book.

In the evening we met up again, near the river and went to a place she had heard about called Curry Queen, which does some of the best Thai Curries in Bangkok (apparently)... and my Massaman was indeed very good (somewhere between the two other ones I had, in terms of creaminess). It was a special version of Massaman Currie according to the menu as well.
My plan of having an alcohol free day were cancelled when we made plans to go and visit a skybar.
The closest one (just around the corner really) was on top of Bangkok State Tower on the 64th floor. We went around that particular corner and in front of us rose a pretty impressive white building with hundreds of balconies and a golden dome on top.
It wasn't easy to find the entrance to this Hotel. When we finally did we were told (in a very nice way) that our appearance was not suitable for the skybar, but we could have a drink at the pool bar on the 13th floor.
The bar was still very sophisticated and everything was held in dark colours, only dimly lit. I chose the cheapest Whisky on the menu... 15 year old Glenfiddich Single Malt (yes... that was the cheapest) but was a bit surprised when it arrived in a large tumbler made of plastic.

Despite that, It tasted quite nice and came with complementary peanuts and a refreshing wet towel.
We enjoyed the location for a while and were trying to figure out how long we could travel for the money a night would cost in this hotel.

Back at my reasonably priced hostel with all necessities I avoided any further offers of socializing and went to bed. I had to get up early to get over to the Embassy to start my Visa procedures.
