So the plan was to walk around and talk to some of the dive shop owners and get an idea of prices and dive sites.
It was a little bit like Koh Tao with many shops to chose from.
Back at the pier where the ferry dropped me off last night was lots of activity now during the day. A few party sailing catamarans had arrived from Cancun, filled with drunk spring breakers trying to dance, blasting silly music across the bay. I am wondering if I am just old ?! I don't think even when I was 18 I would have enjoyed this sort of thing.
The island of Isla Mujeres (which means the Island of women was named after many images of pre-columbian goddesses of the Maya that were found here) is a long narrow island (about 7 * 0.6 km) with its major town in the north, where I was staying.
I wanted to walk along the shore for a while but the only possible path was along the only thoroughfare which was very busy with locals on scooters and tourists in golf carts (the offical rental car of the island).
I made it about half way when I realized it wasn't worth going on, so I just walked into one of the resorts along the coast to get a drink.
It wasn't very busy. There were just two old skippers from the US and a polish guy sitting at the little coconut leaf covered beach bar.
The two US guys were cool, they were just old mates sailing around the Caribbean in their boat enjoying their retirement money...
The polish guy was a bit strange, he apparently was the mate one of the yachts (the biggest one in the harbour of course) and was driving it around the place for some America Billionaire. This may be true but the way he was bragging about all the stuff was a bit annoying.
Nonetheless, he insisted to pay for my beer and then forced me to drink three tequilas with him and some other high ranking guy (who was sound and didn't have the need to brag much at all) of the resort.
So, it was only 1 pm and I already had one or two beers and three tequilas... and it was something like 30 degrees..... ARRRRIBA!!!!!
It was time to get back to the northern end of the island, so I walked along the sandy beaches of North Shore, where all the tourists spend their days in the sand.
It was really nice and just as you imagine a perfect beach with palm trees, white sand and that perfectly clear water. It also was not that busy as the travel guide suggested, especially since it was spring break time in Mexico at the moment.
After a lovely walk through the sand and over some rocks I got back to the hotel and decided to do some research on tripadvisor to compare the dive shops.
One of the places I went was Mundaca and this was also rated and reviewed very good on the website, so I went back and reserved a spot for two dives tomorrow morning.
Then I was off to the beach for a swim.
While back at the beach and drying off I got to talk to two guys and a girl from the states that were on the benches next to me (the benches that should only be used by hotel guests I guess ;-)).
We had a great chat, about what they do at home and about the places I went on my trip and we got along very well. They got drinks from the beach bar and since I didn't bring my wallet to the beach they invited me (I offered to pay them back but was denied).
So this was drink number 6 - 9 today that I didn't pay for. I felt a little bad but could very well live with it.
After this we all headed over to a Taco place near the beach to get some food. I said, I really should be getting my wallet now, but again was invited and no chance to change their minds. I told them we can meet up tomorrow again and I could invite them then.
It was a good night out but I had to get up early tomorrow to join the dive trip, so I headed back to the hotel just around midnight.
